The all-new next-generation pickups are here. introductionthe all-new chevy silverado is here. Completely redesigned, the new silverado is built on a stiffer chassis. Also very important, the 2007 silverado features an all-new interior that can be outfitted for work or pleasure. the new silverado is designed to continue its reputation among owners as the 'strongest, most dependable and longest lasting truck on the road.' the new styling is bold yet still conservative when compared with the latest pickups from dodge, nissan, toyota and ford. While the sheet metal is all new, the main reason the new silverado looks bolder is that it's three inches wider in front and an inch wider in the rear than the outgoing generation. (the older-generation trucks will continue to be sold as the 2007 silverado classic. Naturally, not all engines extended cab and crew cab models have back seats and windows in the side doors that power down. The extended cab has rear access doors that are hinged at the rear but that open to 170 degrees to provide full access to the rear seating area. the standard cab can be outfitted with a standard (6-foot, 6-inch) or long (8-foot) beds. Options include driver and front-seat side-impact air bags, side-curtain airbags, stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, autotrack active transfer case, ultrasonic rear parking assist, onstar. option prices vary by trim level and body style. Among them: a cargo management rail system for the truck bed 175), a power sliding sunroof 795), 20-inch wheels 1,295), a power sliding rear window 200), rear-seat entertainment system 1,955), navigation system 2,250), rear-locking differential 395), stabilitrak electronic stability control 425). Accessories such as step rails and chrome exterior trim are available from chevy truck dealers. note that until production of the all-new 2007 model ramps up, dealers will continue to sell the former version as the 2007 chevrolet silverado classic. This is the previous-generation version and should not be confused with the vehicle covered in this report. walkaroundthe 2007 chevy silverado may not have the aggressive styling of the dodge ram or nissan titan or even the toyota tundra or ford f-150, but its upright design may be considered both bold and appealing to its faithful customers, and they buy hundreds of thousands of silverados each year. the new design gives the 2007 chevy silverado a taller and stronger appearance than the previous generation. Indeed, the new silverado should look stronger because it's some three inches wider in front and an inch wider in the rear. however, a more raked windshield (raked at 57 degrees) and careful aerodynamic and body-building engineering make the truck both quieter on the inside and more fuel efficient. Gm boasts that the silverado and gmc sierra are the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. the large, gold chevy bowtie badge is set against a wide, three-bar chrome grille. The grille is flanked by stacked headlamps sporting the latest reflector-optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lamps. the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlamps within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells. the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lamps on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares. built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup truck gets a unique rear frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. Overall, compared to the former gmt800 truck, the frame is 234 percent stiffer torsionally, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. All of this allows such things as reducing the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. It also enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency and allows suspension components to provide improved ride and handling characteristics. the front suspension has switched from torsion bars to coil-over shock absorbers and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame to provide enhanced control and feedback. The truck also has a new rear axle design with shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control. interiorthe silverado wt and lt come with what chevy calls the pure pickup truck interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior. the pure pickup interior is more driver oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. This interior also features larger switchgear controls and interior door handles designed to be easily manipulated even while wearing bulky work gloves. the more luxury-oriented interior includes bucket seats with a permanent center console with 20 liters of storage capacity. The center stack also puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. This version has a single glove box in the dash. extended cabs feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear seat bottoms can be easily be folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. Rear seats are split 60/40 so one side can be folded up for cargo while the other is used for seating. chevy says the interior of the new sierra is 20 percent quieter than its predecessor, thanks to enhanced insulation materials, much like those used in the company's sport utility vehicles, and to aerodynamic improvements that reduce wind noise. driving impressionwe've driven two versions of the all-new 2007 chevy silverado on paved and gravel roads in the desert west and north of phoenix. Later we got into the more upscale version of the lt with an extended cab and standard bed, same v8 engine and same z85 suspension. 2008 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big, roomy and practical. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a big, roomy sedan. While classified as a midsize sedan, it's large for that class. Close in size to the toyota avalon, competes with mid-size and full-size cars. Among them: the ford taurus, chrysler 300, dodge charger, as well as the honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima. we find the impala's neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks fresh, and it is, having been sharpened when the impala was last redesigned for 2006. Other people think so: the impala is among the top-10 best-selling cars in the u. S. this is a roomy car, in the front as well as the back seats, and getting in and out is easy. The impala has a big trunk with a big trunk lid that makes loading cargo easy, and it has a healthy cargo capacity. Optional flip-and-fold rear seats are exclusive in its class, and provide not only holding wells for groceries but a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items. on the road, the impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available v6 engines, a 3. 9-liter v6 with advanced technologies. Step on the gas and it goes. Given its size, the impala handles well, and surprisingly so. several models are available, ranging from strong, reliable, fuel-efficient family sedan to sleek and powerful performance car. The mid-level impala lt probably best exemplifies the model line. We like the lt with the optional 3. 9-liter v6, which features gm's active fuel management to improve real-world fuel economy. The ltz adds a heavy-duty suspension, leather interior and convenience features. The ss comes with a small-block 5. 3-liter v8 engine that sounds great and delivers strong acceleration performance. chevrolet continues to improve and upgrade the impala. We highly recommend the stabilitrak electronic stability control. The audio system has been upgraded for 2008, and xm satellite radio is standard on all models. Onstar is standard, and in its latest version it will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the 911 centers. overall, the chevrolet impala is a comfortable and convenient car, practical and enjoyable to drive. The clever flip-and-fold rear seats are available 295); so is an engine block heater 75). A flex-fuel version of the v6 can burn e85 ethanol; it's standard in most states, optional in others. lt 21,865) upgrades to dual-zone air conditioning, eight-way power adjustable driver's seat, dual exhausts, fog lights, 16-inch aluminum wheels, a compass, and more interior conveniences. Abs/ebd and traction control are also standard. The ss comes with 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels, p235/50 w-rated performance tires, fe3 performance suspension, and leather-appointed bucket seats, although cloth-upholstered buckets are available for a credit 1125). safety features that come standard on all impalas include dual front smart air bags and side-curtain roof-mounted air bags for front- and rear-seat passengers. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and traction control are standard on 2lt, ltz and ss, optional on ls and lt. Stabilitrak is offered for the first time on an impala and is standard on 2lt, ltz, and ss. A tire-pressure monitor is standard. walkaroundthe 2008 chevrolet impala presents a clean, neat, pleasing design that's not so homogenized as to be boring. It's an attractive car. most recently re-styled for 2006, the current impala features smooth lines. The big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise. the ls, lt and ltz are distinguished by exterior trim but share one front end design, while the ss sports a unique grille with ss-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The impala ss also features corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard on ltz and ss models, and is available on lt. interiorthe 2008 impala has a lot going for it inside as well. Like the exterior, the cabin was completely redesigned for 2006, and has remained comfortably the same since then. the standard seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support compared to previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive. Lumbar support is too aggressive, while there's not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. a twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. Impala ls, lt and ltz models have wood trim, with brushed silver trim a no-cost option on lt and ltz. The ss comes standard with unique metallic trim panels, with wood as an option. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are a grade above average. the dual-zone climate control system that comes on all but the base ls model is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff. for 2008, a new family of audio systems features radios compatible with generation 7. 0 onstar. The base audio system comes with six speakers, am/fm/cd/mp3 capability, and xm satellite radio. It features speed-sensing volume control and a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with gm's radios. The impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-cd changer. The premium system is bose. Turn-by-turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the onstar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination. Besides being easy to use (all directions are downloaded to the car by an advisor) turn-by-turn is less expensive than a gps navigation system. the back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The forward-flipping rear seat cushions reveal a storage t.
