2013 kia rio review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Stylish, efficient and fun. introductionthe kia rio delivers excellent fuel economy, perky performance and a strong warranty for an attractive price with a degree of style. The 2013 kia rio sedan and hatchback get a revised badge on the hood, trunk lid and steering wheel. Steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters now come on the sx model; hatchback ex and sx trims get a standard cargo floor tray and net. Its 1. 6-liter engine uses direct injection to aid power and fuel economy, resulting in the best horsepower in the segment and fuel economy highway ratings in the 40-mpg range. The optional idle stop and go system found on the eco package, typically reserved for more expensive cars, automatically turns the engine off and on at long stops, saving more fuel for urban drivers and reducing emissions.  rio's all-disc brakes are uncommon in this bracket, as are its available 17-inch wheels. Suspension is conventional in design, delivering a ride suitable for long commutes and behavior suitable for the class.  cabins are nicely put together. They're easy to live with and not overwrought with gimmicky styling. Everything is easy to operate and anyone can quickly master the controls. Kia's reputation for value is carried on by standard features such as air conditioning and power-heated mirrors. Mid-line rio models have bluetooth as standard. Upgrades include navigation, kia's uvo infotainment system by microsoft, rear camera, leather upholstery and heated front seats.  both sedan and hatchback models offer useful space; we favor the hatch for its added load flexibility and maneuverability. Rio seats are comfortable. And there's good cubby storage in the center console and side door pockets. Interior room stacks up well against competitors, but while rio is best in terms of front legroom, it suffers from cramped legroom in the rear.  on the road, the rio is smooth and feels refined for the class. Lx models come with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, wind-up windows and manual door locks, heated power mirrors, tilt steering, variable intermittent wipers, six-way manual driver seat, split folding rear seat, am/fm/cd/mp3/aux/usb stereo with steering wheel controls and 15-inch steel wheels. Rio 5-door hatchbacks include rear wipe/wash.  rio ex 16,500) and rio 5-door ex 16,700) come with the 6-speed automatic. Rio ex models upgrade with power windows and locks, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, bluetooth, sliding center console armrest, front tweeters, metallic cabin trim with faux leather door panels, power-folding mirrors, cruise control, and chrome trim. Optional is a convenience package 1,150) adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, additional interior lighting, upgraded audio system with uvo-by-microsoft rear camera, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, automatic headlamps, fog lamps and 15-inch alloy wheels. The eco package 400) includes automatic stop/start, which turns the engine off when stopped to save fuel.  rio sx 17,700) and rio 5-door sx 17,900) are offered with the automatic transmission only and come with everything found on the ex plus a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, dual exhaust outlets, sports suspension calibration, 205/45r17 tires on alloy wheels, larger front brakes, projector headlamps, led tail and front running lamps, fog lamps, painted center dash, alloy pedal covers, and uvo entertainment with rear camera. A premium package 2,300) adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, pushbutton start/smart key, led map lights, uvo navigation and moonroof.  safety features, all standard, include front airbags, front side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, electronic stability control and hill-start assist. walkaroundfamily resemblances are apparent with the kia rio. Certain styling cues are shared with the current-generation optima midsize sedan, which underwent an extreme makeover from dowdy to dapper in its last redesign. Rio's looks aren't groundbreaking, but they are as contemporary as anything in the class.  rio sedan and hatchback models share front doors and basic structures but surface cosmetics keep them separate. The sedan mirrors the optima more, with the pinched center top grille and full-width lower air intake. The hatchback has a much smaller upper grille, almost like an engine air intake rather than cooling, and a deeper lower grille segmented in three sections where the angled side sections meet the flat center. Sedan and hatch models use different headlamp housings, and the sx version of each also gets unique lights, including led daytime running lights. On both body styles the front wheels are well outboard of the headlights, adding a lower, more aggressive look; it's not mean, nor as comic-like as some small cars.  a pronounced wedge profile in side view shares a deep front door window, and ahead of the mirror, a small triangular piece of fixed glass that's quite useful for driver vision. The top crease of the scallop in the door panels echoes the windshield pillar line and fairs rearward, on the sedan leading directly to the top of the taillight. Combined with the slender roof pillar and minimal painted surfaces above the lamps, the sedan has an elegant, light, tailored look, disguising the substantial trunk height.  on the hatch the roofline tapers down, pinching the rear windows, one reason the rio hatch does not have more rear-seat headroom than the sedan. The short rear panels wrap around into the hatch, the lights protruding slightly (but still well inside the bumper) for better all-around viewing and staying cleaner in bad weather. On sx models, the taillights have led elements.  the hatchback's rear window is close to horizontal at the top edge, fitted with a small spoiler, and close to a semicircular arc along the bottom edge, reminiscent of the grinning grille on some mazdas. A dark close-out panel sweeps up from behind the rear wheels serves to visually lower and widen both models. With trunk or hatch open some portion of the taillights and low-mount reflectors remain visible to improve night-loading safety.  compared with the ford fiesta, chevrolet sonic, honda fit, and toyota yaris, the rio has a longer wheelbase but shorter overall length, and it's wider and lower than most. Extra wheelbase helps ride quality and stability, but a longer wheelbase with a shorter overall length also means shorter overhangs front and rear. All these dimension play into how the rio comes across a bit sportier than most other subcompacts. While it doesn't scream luxury, it doesn't scream economy car, either.  cloth upholstery feels smooth and breathable to the touch; we never slid around or got stuck to it in muggy weather. Some long-legged types noted short seat cushions but found the cabin roomier than expected.  rear-seat space is small, yet comparable to others in the class and is fine for kids or petite adults. The three-cylinder instrument panel provides the usual info, including an engine temperature gauge many manufacturers have relegated to warning lights. Crisp white-on-black lighting with red needles and central display ensures readability day or night. The traditional key was welcome, though at least once we had trouble pulling it back out of the ignition.  audio inputs and power points are ahead of the shifter, the control panel top center. 2004 toyota sienna review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The new class leader?. introductionthe toyota sienna is all new for 2004. Bigger and better than last year's model, it's the first in a parade of redesigned minivans and may be the new class leader. It's considerably larger than last year's model, and about $1,000 cheaper. Its v6 engine has been bored out for more power and now produces 230 horsepower, while a new five-speed automatic improves response and fuel economy. All come with the new v6 engine and the new five-speed automatic transmission. All are equipped with anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, which help the driver stop quickly and maintain control. The all-wheel-drive xle has a base msrp of $36,930.  numerous option packages are available for all grades.  safety features: a new latch system (lower anchor with tether for children) is used in all second-row seating positions to accommodate new-design child seats. Front side and side curtain srs airbags covering all three seat rows are standard on the xle limited, optional on all other grades. Before designing the new sienna, chief engineer yuji yokoya drove the previous sienna all over north america, through mexico, canada, and the u. S., through every state, every province, some 53,000 miles. A short, slight japanese man, yokoya-san was often accompanied by program manager john jula, a tall, burly american. An odd couple, they couldn't have been more different in stature, appearance, and temperament. But they shared a seriousness of purpose, a devotion to designing the best minivan ever created, and a strong sense of humor. Working with designers and engineers from around the world, they ferreted every weakness and shortcoming of the old (1998-2003) sienna and addressed it with this new sienna.  the biggest shortcoming of the old sienna was its lack of interior roominess. Yokoya saw families buried under luggage. He also determined it needed to be quieter so families could more easily converse on long drives. He wanted better seats. And he wanted to improve stability at high speeds, especially in cross winds and on crowned roads.  the all-new 2004 toyota sienna is substantially larger, wider, taller than the previous-generation model. Its wheelbase is 5 inches longer and the track is 4 inches wider than last year's model. Stretching 200 inches over a 119-inch wheelbase, the new sienna is the same size as the biggest minivans on the market: the honda odyssey, dodge grand caravan, chrysler town & country, ford windstar, and the long-wheelbase versions of the chevrolet venture and pontiac montana.  everything on the sienna is big and bold: big headlamps and big taillamps light up the night and give the sienna presence in the dark. Black pillars, instead of body-colored pillars, make the new sienna look even larger than its considerable dimensions. A big windshield, big wipers, and wiper-mounted washer nozzles designed for snow belt improve driver visibility.  the sienna presents a sleek appearance by minivan standards, enhanced by its steeply raked windshield and the black pillars. The slot for the sliding doors is cleverly hidden, offering a cleaner look. There's lots of room for passengers and cargo. Fold the second- and third-row seats flat and the sienna can carry 4x8 sheets of plywood.  getting in and out of the sienna is easy. The power sliding doors are smooth and quiet and move more quickly than in the past, helpful for impatient passengers. Manual sliding doors and manual rear hatch on the le and ce models have a quality feel as well.  the rear side windows lower partly, though not below the center of gravity of a toddler, and feature anti-pinch protection designed to reduce chance of injuries to small hands and fingers. A nice feature is the availability of sunshades for the second- and third-row seats, which filters strong sunlight better than privacy glass.  up front the driver sits before a smooth, organic dash. Toyota says it splurged on the seats, which are designed to offer comfort for a variety of body shapes over long periods of time. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes. The ce comes with a nice cloth interior, though the door inserts are plain. Le features nicer cloth, nicer door inserts, and other trim. Two glove boxes are provided and a big center console holds 12 cds. Armrest compartments can each hold six cds and there's a spot for a small cell phone just to the right of the shifter. The dry cleaning hooks look big enough to accomodate a load of dry cleaning. In back are hooks for holding grocery bags. There's comparably good legroom and it feels roomy and airy with good room next to the passenger's head. That's impressive given that the sienna is fitted with side-curtain type airbags; they do not intrude into rear headroom as much as other designs. When not needed, the second-row seats tumble forward, presenting a friendly seat bottom to cargo or pets. The second-row seats are easy to remove and reinstall, though the captain's chairs weigh 49 pounds each.  seven. 2010 hyundai genesis coupe review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sporty new coupe features rear-wheel drive. introductionwhen the 2009 hyundai genesis sedan took home north american car of the year, some doubters thought it a fluke, a lucky shot by a rookie. Both come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, increasingly a rarity, if offered at all, in the sporty coupe market. The optional automatics are shiftronic manu matics with steering column-mounted shift paddles. For the multi media generation, ipod and usb audio inputs are standard along with a simple auxiliary jack.  all of this, though, is icing on the cake. This is a very competent, nicely balanced sporty coupe that feels as at home on a closed track as slogging through daily commute traffic. Rear-wheel drive is generally regarded as being better for sporty handling than front-wheel drive, and the genesis takes advantage of this. We found the ride and handling on the street and on the track to be remarkably good, especially for a car with a starting sticker price of $22,000. lineupthe 2010 hyundai genesis coupe comes in two basic models: the 2. 0t and the 3. 8. The 2. 0t's optional transmission is a five-speed automatic with shiftronic 1,250). The 3. 8's optional transmission is a six-speed automatic with shiftronic 1,500). Also available is the 2. 0t r-spec 23,750) available only with the six-speed manual.  the 2. 0t comes with fabric upholstery, power windows, outside mirrors and central locking; leather-wrapped shift knob and manual tilt steering wheel; six-speaker multi-media stereo; and xm satellite radio and bluetooth capability are all standard across the line. The 3. 8 track shares the 2. 0t track's aero and handling bits.  options are limited to floor mats 95) and an ipod cable 30). These are added after the coupe leaves the ship at the port of entry.  safety equipment includes frontal, side-impact and side-curtain airbags. The front seats have active, anti-whiplash head restraints. The rear seat comes outfitted with child safety seat anchors. Active safety features include antilock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control with traction control and tire pressure monitors. Some of it works and some of it doesn't. On the upside, it's distinctive. On the downside, it's distinctive. The only visual feature it shares with the sedan is the company's stylized h logo.  the front end is an intriguing collage of swoops and scoops. Two sharp hood creases squeeze past the upper grille to pinch down on top of a lower grille flanked by horizontal polished ribs on flat black insets pushing the fog lights to the extremes of the lower fascia, which itself wraps around the front tire wells to emphasize the broad stance. Projector-beam headlights peer out of compound housings slashed into the fenders. There's a nice balance between hood and boot, which are split by a perfectly proportioned glasshouse. Right-sized tires on airy alloy wheels fill round wheel wells. Topping it off is something called a z character line that broadcasts sportiness to passersby. The curves of the body catch the light and shadow and a z-shaped reflection breaks up what would otherwise be a large expanse of sheet metal along the sides of the car.  to the extent there's any hyundai legacy in the genesis coupe it's found in the hindmost view. Were it not for the car's mass, followers might think they were tailgating a tiburon, the smaller, lower priced, less-sophisticated sporty coupe (phased out during the 2008 model year). There's the same lower valance with almost identical wide spaced exhaust tips, a similar oval ness to the taillight rear bumper fascia trunk lid grouping and the same tucked-in tapering of the rear quarter panels behind the rear tires. This isn't to say the look is other than pleasant, but the clear visual linkage to that older, lesser coupe is strong enough that it could dim the new coupe's up-market prospects, at least to those following behind. interiorthe genesis coupe interior shows cost-cutting doesn't have to mean cheap. Yes, most of the larger pieces are hard plastic, and pizzazz is not a word that comes readily to mind when describing the gauges and array of switches and knobs on the center stack. But for the most part, where function and feel matter, the genesis coupe measures up.  seats, those in front at least, are comfortable but sufficiently assertive to hold the backside in place during spirited motoring, especially in the 2. 0t with its basic black cloth. The 3. 8's leather is a nice touch of semi-luxury, but it's slippery, as well as sweaty in the hot months and clammy in the cold. It's that old debate between cloth and leather.  the back seats are only for small children and, in some states, lower insurance premiums.  the steering wheel feels good, with just the right rim thickness and cross section. The shift knob, steering wheel and driver's seat hip-point triangulate well for 90-percentile males. The column-mounted shift paddles for the shiftronic automatics are at the fingertips of hands at the 10-and-2 o'clock positions and are within reach from 9-and-3. The up/down slot on the console mounted shift gate opens toward the driver, where it's a natural tug at the lever. The foot pedals are where the driver's feet expect; heel and toeing in the six speed manuals could be easier but doesn't demand a stretch or awkward ankle twist. Unlike the buttons for the power windows, which are placed on the door armrest at such an odd angle that to use them requires twisting the wrist into an almost painful contortion.  the primary gauges are analog, with coolant temperature and fuel gauges embedded in the base of the speedometer and tachometer, respectively. Basic, bright red needles communicate their information quickly and surely. The aforementioned knobs, buttons and rocker switches for the audio and climate management controls are large and logically located, with audio controls up top for ready access requiring minimal shift of the driver's line of sight away from the road ahead, to which a low dash gives bay window-like visibility. Quite the contrary is true for lane checks; despite a recessed lower sill that expands the glass area, the rear quarter windows offer limited visibility, in large part due to the large c-pillar.  cargo area isn't commonly a strong point for coupes, and the genesis coupe does not challenge that perception. With 10 cubic feet of cargo space, the genesis coupe holds more than the 2009 mazda rx-8 (7. 6 cu. Ft.), less than the bmw 328i/335i coupe (15. 5 cu. Ft.).  nor is a roomy cabin traditionally a coupe's forte, another standard to which this coupe adheres. That said, the genesis coupe holds up well against those competitors in terms of front seat roominess. Front-seat head room tops that in the rx-8 and 3 series coupe by about one inch. The same holds for front-seat leg room, which bests those two by more than two inches. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Tachometer✔ Power Windows✔ Climate Control✔ Bluetooth✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Alloy Wheels

2003 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New hemi v8 brings more power. introductiondodge ram boasts high levels of refinement and comfort. Completely redesigned and re-engineered last year, this latest-generation ram has re-established dodge as a leading product among full-size pickups. But all this refinement doesn't mean the dodge ram has gone soft. The new-generation ram also delivers improved towing and hauling capability, plus more powerful and efficient engines.  for 2003, dodge has introduced a sophisticated new five-speed automatic transmission. A more capable off-road package has been added, along with a rugged work special. Also new for 2003 is a line of heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models, not covered here.  in january 2003, the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 replaced the aging 5. 9-liter v8, increasing power by 100 horsepower and 40 pounds-feet of torque while improving fuel economy by 10 percent. lineupdodge ram is available with two cab configurations, regular cab and quad cab. Prices start at $18,525 for a 2wd regular cab short wheelbase. Quad cab models ride on a wheelbase that's 20 inches longer than comparable regular cab models.  two bed lengths are available, a 6-foot, 3-inch standard bed and an 8-foot long bed. Ordering the long bed adds $300-$350 to the price, and another 20 inches to the wheelbase. For maximum economy, two-wheel-drive rams can be ordered with a 3. 7-liter v6 that's similar in design to the 4. 7-liter v8. The most powerful engine in the line is the new 5. 7-liter hemi v8 with hemispherical combustion chambers for improved airflow and burn. The new hemi produces 345 horsepower and 375 foot-pounds of torque. When properly equipped, that increases the towing capacity to 9200 pounds and payload by an additional 500 pounds. The hemi adds about $800 to the price.  a five-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3. 7-liter v6 and 4. 7-liter v8. Optional is a new five-speed automatic 975) that includes an alternate second gear for hill-climbing and towing (so it's technically a six-speed). This new transmission is more responsive than the unit it replaces.  three trim levels are available, st, slt, and laramie.  st is the base level and comes standard with air conditioning, but is equipped with vinyl upholstery, wind-up windows, and manual door locks.  slt adds $1700-$3200, depending on cab style and driveline, and includes the 4. 7-liter v8, plus cloth upholstery, nicer interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a host of convenience items, and wider tires.  laramie is the luxury package, which costs in the neighborhood of $7800-$8900 and brings leather seating surfaces, dual-zone air conditioning, a premium stereo, 17-inch cast aluminum wheels, and a long, long list of luxury features.  sport body-color trim for grille and bumpers is available for $470 with any trim level; that price includes fog lights and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Also new this year is an off-road package 870-$1405) for 4wd models consisting of a 3. 92:1 limited-slip differential, heavy-duty engine cooling, lt275/70r17 all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and fog lamps. walkaroundram's radical big-rig styling turned the pickup world upside down when it was introduced in 1994. It was a highly successful design, one that gave the dodge pickups a look of power and capability. The bold styling also helped boost sales exponentially. So dodge had no intention of turning away from the big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders when it redesigned the ram. This latest dodge pickup maintains and even reinforces the look established nine years ago.  the sheet metal is indeed all new. Park a 2002-3 ram next to a 2001 or earlier ram and the differences are striking. The design has been extensively re-sculpted for reduced wind noise and better rainwater management. The new ram looks sleek and refined compared with the previous model. The old one looks mashed down compared with the new one.  few grilles are as instantly recognizable as the massive horse collar grille of the ram. Even more massive this year, the grille also provides trim-level identification: the outside rim is all chrome on the slt model, with a gray honeycomb center. Laramie features a body-color grille surround and chrome cross hairs. Sport trim includes a body-color surround and cross hairs with unique chrome billets in the center.  moving rearward, the new ram presents a more robust appearance than before. The broad, sloping hood has a pronounced crown that falls over the sides to the prominent front fenders. A faster, raked-back windshield improves aerodynamics and water management, and gives the new ram a more modern appearance. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smoother transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smoother and more integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are now mounted on platforms to reduce wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keeps water off of the mirrors. An integrated air dam improves engine cooling and air conditioner performance.  standard bed length is 6 feet, 3 inches, but an 8-foot bed is now available for both cab styles. That's a bit much when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. interiorram interiors were completely redesigned last year.  the new interior is more comfortable than before. That comfort starts with roominess. To fit more space in the cab, dodge stole 3 inches out of the bed and added it to the cab's total length. Dodge claims its regular cab has the largest interior of any full-size standard-cab pickup.  the cloth 40/20/40 split bench front seat in the sport model is quite supportive, better than some of the seats we've seen recently in other brands. The optional leather seats are also comfortable and supportive during long drives. Three-point shoulder belts are used at all locations, including the rear center seat. Adjustable pedals are usually offered only with an automatic transmission, but for 2003 dodge has made them available on manual-shift pickups as well. We believe that's an industry first.  side-curtain airbags are a $390 option on regular cabs, $490 on quad cabs. A big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. White-faced instruments with turquoise numbers look sporty and trendy, but don't offer the legibility of traditional white-on-black designs, particularly at dusk. At night, the instruments are nicely illuminated in green.  the design of the audio system could be improved for ease of use. Setting a button for a station, for example, requires pressing a separate 'set' button, rather than just holding the station button down. Sliding bass and treble controls are harder to adjust than knobs when bouncing around in a pickup truck. Optional steering wheel audio controls 75) solve this with brilliantly designed buttons behind the steering wheel that are easy to use. Likewise, cruise controls 390, including tilt steering) on the steering wheel are easy to operate.  otherwise, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls, somewhat similar to what's found in volkswagens, gives the center dash a nice look and feel. Just below the hvac controls is a slot lined with a rubber mat that's perfect for a wallet or other small items. A big panel below that folds down with adjustable cup holders.
