It can be equipped with a standard bed (6-foot, 6-inch) or a long bed (8-foot), two bucket seats or a three-person bench seat, v6 or v8. the extended cab has two rows of seats with rear-hinged rear access doors that open 170 degrees and have roll-down windows. The extended cab can be equipped with either a short bed (5-foot, 8-inch), standard or long bed. Also available: driver and front-seat passenger side-impact air bags; anti-lock brakes, stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, autotrac active transfer case, ultrasonic rear park assist, onstar emergency notification. walkaroundthe front-end design of the 2008 gmc sierra emphasizes the truck's wide stance. The gmc emblem is set amid dark horizontal bars in the middle of an upright and chrome-surrounded grille. The headlamps are a pair of stacked, jeweled lenses. The pickups get a unique rear suspension and frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. The sierra and silverado share mechanical components, with the exception of the unique features found on the sierra denali. compared with the previous-generation, the current frame is 234 percent stiffer in torsional rigidity, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. This yields a smoother ride and better handling. It also allowed the engineers to reduce the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment as well as the gaps between fenders and bumpers, all of which enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. the front suspension uses a coil-over-shock setup and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame. The truck also has a new rear axle design with shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control. interiorthe gmc sierra slt boasts interior features popularized by the yukon sport utility, providing a much more upscale environment for the driver and passengers. Gmc hasn't forgotten about owners who use their trucks for work, however. So other sierra models use a pure pickup interior with more function, like dual glove boxes, and less luxury. the 'pure pickup,' as it's called, has a unique dashboard that is more driver-oriented and has larger switchgear and door handles that are designed to be easily manipulated by those wearing work gloves. The pure pickup interior includes a 40/20/40 split front bench seat with the center section folding down to provide a large storage compartment and wide armrest. the suv-style luxury-oriented interior puts audio and ventilation system controls more easily within reach of the front-seat passenger and has two front bucket seats with a fixed center console with assorted storage compartments. either dashboard sports full analog instrumentation, and many have more info available through digital display. Operating controls are gm simple, especially on the pure pickup, while the top-line models central dash has many small white-on-black buttons that may require a short learning curve. Some drivers report peculiar ergonomic details as the steering wheel is slightly offset from the seat centerline. rear seating is provided for three people in the extended and crew cab versions, with 34. 3 inches of rear legroom in the extended cab and 38. 7 in the crew cab, space is similar to ford's f-150 and nissan's titan, and smaller than dodge's quad and mega cabs and tundra's double and crewmax cabs. The crew cab rear seat is split 60/40 and can folded up individually for a flat load floor; this arrangement is optional on extended cabs. access to the rear seating area of the extended cab is eased by rear-hinged doors that open to nearly flush with the bed sides. Sitting in the back seat of the extended cab is made more pleasant thanks to the fact that the windows in the rear access doors power fully down. driving impressionwe've driven multiple versions of the new gmc sierra and found all of them to be comfortable. the 5. 3-liter v8 provided plenty of power for the extended cab sle models we drove and the 6. 0-liter v8 was more than enough for the slt crew cab we checked out. All engines need to be revved up (by truck standards) for best grunt. Generally the sierra models match competitors for smoothness, though by benefit of their five-speed automatics the ram 4. 7 typically runs with gm's 5. 3, the ram 5. 7 and titan 5. 6 compete with the gm 6. 0, while tundra's 5. 7 and six-speed auto performance can be matched only by the denali's 6. 2 and six-speed auto. of the suspensions, the z83 is claimed the smoothest ride while the z85 is slightly stiffer and for those who often tow.

The all-new next-generation pickups are here. introductionthe all-new chevy silverado is here. Completely redesigned, the new silverado is built on a stiffer chassis. Also very important, the 2007 silverado features an all-new interior that can be outfitted for work or pleasure. the new silverado is designed to continue its reputation among owners as the 'strongest, most dependable and longest lasting truck on the road.' the new styling is bold yet still conservative when compared with the latest pickups from dodge, nissan, toyota and ford. While the sheet metal is all new, the main reason the new silverado looks bolder is that it's three inches wider in front and an inch wider in the rear than the outgoing generation. (the older-generation trucks will continue to be sold as the 2007 silverado classic. Naturally, not all engines extended cab and crew cab models have back seats and windows in the side doors that power down. The extended cab has rear access doors that are hinged at the rear but that open to 170 degrees to provide full access to the rear seating area. the standard cab can be outfitted with a standard (6-foot, 6-inch) or long (8-foot) beds. Options include driver and front-seat side-impact air bags, side-curtain airbags, stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, autotrack active transfer case, ultrasonic rear parking assist, onstar. option prices vary by trim level and body style. Indeed, the new silverado should look stronger because it's some three inches wider in front and an inch wider in the rear. however, a more raked windshield (raked at 57 degrees) and careful aerodynamic and body-building engineering make the truck both quieter on the inside and more fuel efficient. Gm boasts that the silverado and gmc sierra are the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. the large, gold chevy bowtie badge is set against a wide, three-bar chrome grille. The grille is flanked by stacked headlamps sporting the latest reflector-optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lamps. the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlamps within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells. the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lamps on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares. built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup truck gets a unique rear frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. The center stack also puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear seat bottoms can be easily be folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. Rear seats are split 60/40 so one side can be folded up for cargo while the other is used for seating. chevy says the interior of the new sierra is 20 percent quieter than its predecessor, thanks to enhanced insulation materials, much like those used in the company's sport utility vehicles, and to aerodynamic improvements that reduce wind noise. driving impressionwe've driven two versions of the all-new 2007 chevy silverado on paved and gravel roads in the desert west and north of phoenix. Later we got into the more upscale version of the lt with an extended cab and standard bed, same v8 engine and same z85 suspension. 2003 dodge ram 3500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New hemi v8 brings more power. introductiondodge ram boasts high levels of refinement and comfort. Completely redesigned and re-engineered last year, this latest-generation ram has re-established dodge as a leading product among full-size pickups. But all this refinement doesn't mean the dodge ram has gone soft. The new-generation ram also delivers improved towing and hauling capability, plus more powerful and efficient engines. for 2003, dodge has introduced a sophisticated new five-speed automatic transmission. A more capable off-road package has been added, along with a rugged work special. Also new for 2003 is a line of heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models, not covered here. in january 2003, the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 replaced the aging 5. 9-liter v8, increasing power by 100 horsepower and 40 pounds-feet of torque while improving fuel economy by 10 percent. lineupdodge ram is available with two cab configurations, regular cab and quad cab. Prices start at $18,525 for a 2wd regular cab short wheelbase. Quad cab models ride on a wheelbase that's 20 inches longer than comparable regular cab models. two bed lengths are available, a 6-foot, 3-inch standard bed and an 8-foot long bed. Ordering the long bed adds $300-$350 to the price, and another 20 inches to the wheelbase. For maximum economy, two-wheel-drive rams can be ordered with a 3. 7-liter v6 that's similar in design to the 4. 7-liter v8. The most powerful engine in the line is the new 5. 7-liter hemi v8 with hemispherical combustion chambers for improved airflow and burn. The new hemi produces 345 horsepower and 375 foot-pounds of torque. When properly equipped, that increases the towing capacity to 9200 pounds and payload by an additional 500 pounds. The hemi adds about $800 to the price. a five-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3. 7-liter v6 and 4. 7-liter v8. Optional is a new five-speed automatic 975) that includes an alternate second gear for hill-climbing and towing (so it's technically a six-speed). This new transmission is more responsive than the unit it replaces. three trim levels are available, st, slt, and laramie. st is the base level and comes standard with air conditioning, but is equipped with vinyl upholstery, wind-up windows, and manual door locks. slt adds $1700-$3200, depending on cab style and driveline, and includes the 4. 7-liter v8, plus cloth upholstery, nicer interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a host of convenience items, and wider tires. laramie is the luxury package, which costs in the neighborhood of $7800-$8900 and brings leather seating surfaces, dual-zone air conditioning, a premium stereo, 17-inch cast aluminum wheels, and a long, long list of luxury features. sport body-color trim for grille and bumpers is available for $470 with any trim level; that price includes fog lights and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Also new this year is an off-road package 870-$1405) for 4wd models consisting of a 3. 92:1 limited-slip differential, heavy-duty engine cooling, lt275/70r17 all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and fog lamps. walkaroundram's radical big-rig styling turned the pickup world upside down when it was introduced in 1994. It was a highly successful design, one that gave the dodge pickups a look of power and capability. The bold styling also helped boost sales exponentially. So dodge had no intention of turning away from the big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders when it redesigned the ram. This latest dodge pickup maintains and even reinforces the look established nine years ago. the sheet metal is indeed all new. Park a 2002-3 ram next to a 2001 or earlier ram and the differences are striking. The design has been extensively re-sculpted for reduced wind noise and better rainwater management. The new ram looks sleek and refined compared with the previous model. The old one looks mashed down compared with the new one. few grilles are as instantly recognizable as the massive horse collar grille of the ram. Even more massive this year, the grille also provides trim-level identification: the outside rim is all chrome on the slt model, with a gray honeycomb center. Laramie features a body-color grille surround and chrome cross hairs. Sport trim includes a body-color surround and cross hairs with unique chrome billets in the center. moving rearward, the new ram presents a more robust appearance than before. The broad, sloping hood has a pronounced crown that falls over the sides to the prominent front fenders. A faster, raked-back windshield improves aerodynamics and water management, and gives the new ram a more modern appearance. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smoother transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smoother and more integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are now mounted on platforms to reduce wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keeps water off of the mirrors. An integrated air dam improves engine cooling and air conditioner performance. standard bed length is 6 feet, 3 inches, but an 8-foot bed is now available for both cab styles. That's a bit much when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. interiorram interiors were completely redesigned last year. the new interior is more comfortable than before. That comfort starts with roominess. To fit more space in the cab, dodge stole 3 inches out of the bed and added it to the cab's total length. Dodge claims its regular cab has the largest interior of any full-size standard-cab pickup. the cloth 40/20/40 split bench front seat in the sport model is quite supportive, better than some of the seats we've seen recently in other brands. The optional leather seats are also comfortable and supportive during long drives. Three-point shoulder belts are used at all locations, including the rear center seat. Adjustable pedals are usually offered only with an automatic transmission, but for 2003 dodge has made them available on manual-shift pickups as well. We believe that's an industry first. side-curtain airbags are a $390 option on regular cabs, $490 on quad cabs. A big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. White-faced instruments with turquoise numbers look sporty and trendy, but don't offer the legibility of traditional white-on-black designs, particularly at dusk. At night, the instruments are nicely illuminated in green. the design of the audio system could be improved for ease of use. Setting a button for a station, for example, requires pressing a separate 'set' button, rather than just holding the station button down. Sliding bass and treble controls are harder to adjust than knobs when bouncing around in a pickup truck. Optional steering wheel audio controls 75) solve this with brilliantly designed buttons behind the steering wheel that are easy to use. Likewise, cruise controls 390, including tilt steering) on the steering wheel are easy to operate. otherwise, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls, somewhat similar to what's found in volkswagens, gives the center dash a nice look and feel. Just below the hvac controls is a slot lined with a rubber mat that's perfect for a wallet or other small items. A big panel below that folds down with adjustable cup holders. It doesn't get any better than this. introductionporsche continues to make one of the world's great sports cars. Tiptronic adds $3,420 to the price of all models. Special interior trim and exterior pieces along with special paints and leather colors are available. Totally redesigned for the 1999 model year, the carrera's body is longer, wider and sleeker than any before. During its 34-year history, porsche has refined the 911 body several times, but the roofline and windshield had always remained the same as the original model. For 1999, the roofline, windshield and all other body sections were new. This newest-generation 911 represents the first clean-sheet redesign of this legendary sports car since its introduction in 1965. Nevertheless, it maintains the unmistakable 911 profile and classic styling cues. some decry the fact that the 911 shares styling with the front half of the boxster. Driving position is perfect with excellent lateral support for spirited driving. This is a comfortable car for traveling long distances. Visibility is superb all around and instruments are an attractive, quick read. it is a sports car, however: i had to lay my dry cleaning down on the back seat. But when it came time to pick someone up at the airport, i left the carrera 4 at home and took a sport-utility vehicle, as luggage capacity is not the 911's forte. New aluminum-look trim for the shifter, door handles and handbrake release button lends a touch of classic sports car elegance to the design. The automatic climate control now features as standard the previously optional activated charcoal odor filter. driving impressionthe performance of this porsche is nothing short of extraordinary. there are those who argue porsche's boxster does nearly everything the 911 can do for $24,000 less. But the 911 provides much more power. Even more noticeable is its chassis sophistication. In a 911, the massive tires stay in contact with the road because the suspension keeps them there. Whether it's a 30-mph switchback or a 100-mph sweeper, the 911 driver can blast through at the absolute limit. First of all, it has excellent brakes. Huge brake rotors and one-piece calipers derived from the gt1 racecar, along with ideal weight distribution and massive tire contact patches allow the 911 to generate incredible braking forces. As a result, this car takes off speed in no time. Porsche requires brakes to provide 25 consecutive full-force stops without fade. Its anti-lock brake system is excellent, allowing the driver to steer around the problem while braking at the threshold. The rear end won't slide out (power oversteer) and the front end won't wash out (understeer); the carrera 4 simply accelerates away -- very quickly. It merely takes a different set on the suspension as weight is being transferred fore and aft. sports car enthusiasts can easily recognize a porsche by its sound. Whether one is driving by on a country road or roaring past at le mans, they have a distinctive sound that is legendary. Granted, there is no such thing as too much horsepower, but the carrera 4 did not leave me longing for a turbo. In automatic mode, it's possibly the best, smoothest-shifting automatic i've ever driven. Upshifts and downshifts are super smooth in manual or auto mode. But it's not necessary to shift manually. The automatic mode works superbly. All in all, the 911's tiptronic is a fantastic automatic. in spite of all that, i'd order my carrera 4 with the manual gearbox for its superior control, superior performance and superior fun. pirelli's p-zero tires offer good grip. In a week's worth of driving through rural maryland, i never came. summaryyes, there are other sports cars. One could argue that none of them have that porsche 911 mystique that is impossible to place a value on. One could argue they don't have porsche's panache. But those arguments aren't necessary because this is truly one of the world's finest sports cars. But few sports cars can match the porsche 911's combination of chassis sophistication and power. It is precision machinery. It is easy to drive.
